This is the usual environment in Fallout New Vegas, it is a post apocalyptic wasteland where people have made their own small towns from what is left and the settlers battle the mutated creatures who survived the nuclear explosion. There's few plants and no vehicles in the wasteland but there are wrecks of vehicles, collapsed buildings, broken roads and bridges and areas of high radiation which you can enter but you wont survive long.
The Lighting in the environment is a dim yellow colour and its usually cloudy and the nights are very dark because there is no lighting and in the villages there is little lighting. The texture on the buildings and props give it a very old and weathered look and the ground is broken and unforgiving with steep rock faces. There a places in the game which are shadowed from the sun and are dark and cold. Underground such as in the vaults the lighting is not from the sun so there are artificial light sources like fire or lamps.
How an oil pump works
Mad Max movie plot summary
Oil refinery and oil research
Simple asset silhouettes
To start to concept different small things in the scene I used very basic silhouettes. I used the paintbrush and drew various parts of an oil pump and picked different pieces and put them together to make different variations of an oil pump. I then concepted other parts of the environment such as the buildings ans smaller assets such as barrels.
Tonal recession landscape concepts
In the environment I am creating I needed to concept some landscapes. So I used 4 different tonal markers of different shades of grey and ripped up masking tape into different shapes. I then drew round the shapes and it created the hills. I used the lighter shades of grey for the hills furthest away and the darker grey's for closer up this technique is called tonal recession. When I finished drawing the thumbnails I scanned them into the computer and placed them in a contact sheet in Photoshop.
